Typically, we define autoimmune disease as a condition where the immune system attacks healthy cells in the body. In reality, autoimmune disease is actually just a theory that the body is attacking itself. The term “autoimmune disease” encompasses a collection of various “diseases”. Some examples of autoimmune diseases include Lupus, Multiple Sclerosis, Celiac disease, Hashimoto thyroiditis, Rheumatoid arthritis, and Type 1 diabetes. Autoimmune diseases cause millions to suffer daily and they’re on the rise throughout the world.

Though autoimmune disease has become increasingly common, most of us know very little about what this label actually means. When getting diagnosed with an autoimmune condition, it usually the result of a certain set of symptoms aligning with a particular label. Once we have a diagnosis, we might feel like we’ve gotten an answer. Yet, we aren’t told why the immune system is attacking to begin with. The illness remains  a mystery even with a new name for it. If you’re willing to question why the label “autoimmune” might not be so accurate after all and consider that there is hope, continue on.

What is a Better Label?

I have come to understand that autoimmune disease is not the body attacking itself. Actually, our bodies are always fighting to protect us. In truth, there is actually no evidence that the body attacks itself. There is however plenty of evidence that the immune system produces antibodies to go after foreign invaders. When someone is diagnosed with an autoimmune condition, their immune system is actually attempting to fight pathogens. That’s right, it’s targeting harmful intruders! Now, I know this is controversial. But, I encourage you to pause and think about how much more sense this makes.

When you consider this versus the idea that the incredibly intelligent human body is randomly attacking parts of itself, the whole notion of autoimmune changes. Logically, it just makes sense that the immune system is going after bad guys and not causing harm. I have witnessed countless individuals, including myself, heal from autoimmune conditions. When we understand that pathogens are actually the ones to blame, conditions can be reversed.

It is from this understanding that it seems we shouldn’t call these conditions autoimmune diseases at all. This has us looking for answers in the wrong places. Perhaps, the term chronic illness is a bit more accurate. Not to mention, thinking that your body is failing you disempowers you. Also, having this mindset literally puts the body in a weaker state. Once I learned that my body wasn’t the problem, I experienced a major shift. I gained optimism and perseverance that I’d once lost and my health turned around.

The Cause of Autoimmune Disease

When doing an online search for the cause of autoimmune disease you will see that it is “unknown”. However, thankfully, there is a known cause. It’s just not commonplace yet. Essentially, we are exposed to pathogens throughout our daily lives. Some of them are less of an issue than others. If they aren’t killed off, they end up taking up residence in one more places in the body. The invaders that stay in the body either remain active or go dormant. Those that are dormant are waiting until the right opportunity, or stressful situation, to come alive and cause problems. 

What sort of pathogens are we talking about here? Well, when it comes to autoimmune conditions and chronic illness, there are a couple of common culprits. Epstein Barr Virus is the most common bad guy, along with his buddy Streptococcus. This virus and bacteria both feed off toxins present in the body as well as particular foods we eat. When they are given a comfy place to camp out, they stay and they grow. They end up releasing neurotoxins and byproduct that wreak all sorts of havoc – resulting in innumerable symptoms throughout the body. 

I am painting a large swath here realizing that this is still quite general to explain all autoimmune diseases. Reason being – there are many strains of Epstein Barr Virus and Streptococcus. When you consider that along with the multitude of toxins that can and do end up in our bodies – it’s really a matter of what combination of toxins and pathogens, for how long and where it’s all going on in the body. This is why we can see lists and lists of symptoms people experience when it comes to chronic illness. We are talking about infinite combinations of pathogens and toxins. 

Reversing Chronic Illness

The great news is that when you re-define autoimmune disease, your whole perspective shifts. You learn that you can reverse illness by eliminating the root cause – pathogens and toxins. You can detox your body give it what it needs to fight for you – just like it’s designed to. Ultimately, you can reverse autoimmune conditions and heal! The chronic illness life-sentence is a thing of the past.

I will not suggest that this process is quick. It takes long term commitment to reach the end goal. But, along the way, it becomes clear as symptoms fall away and the body becomes more vital. I can say from my own amazing healing journey having healed from autoimmune disease that the rewards are so very worth it.
